With so many live action retellings being released over the past few years, I was surprised that The Little Mermaid didn’t receive as much hype as the others. In fact, when it was released in theaters, it was only available to watch for a few days and then, gone. It appeared a few months later on Netflix and is still available to watch (at the time that I’m writing this).

I love catching new movies in theaters! And what grabbed my interest particularly about The Little Mermaid was, I’m not going to lie, solely that High King Peter from the Narnia movies (William Mosely) was in it and he looks the exact same. Naturally, I instantly added it to my To-Do Movie list and began counting down the days to its release. I was unfortunately busy the weekend it released but had made plans the following weekend to go see it, only to realize that it was already out of theaters.

That alone kind of told me that it probably wasn’t very good and explained why it wasn’t getting a lot of attention.

Then, it wonderfully appeared in the magical scroll of “Recommended for You” on Netflix a few months later. On a rainy Saturday, that I fully intended to take advantage of and watch as many movies as I could, I made myself some tea, snuggled under my blankets, my giant “lap-dog” cuddled up next to me, and I hit play.

It is the worst movie I watched all day.

The first 10 minutes into the movie, I was sold. It was super interesting, engaging, and of course all I could see was “King Peter” again, so I was loving it. But then, it got really weird. I had a hard time following what was going on because I was expecting a unique plot line but it turned out to be the most predictable, cliché plot I believe I’ve ever seen, especially with gypsies, circuses, and mermaids involved (seriously, take every cliché you know about the three aforementioned topics and apply it to this movie, you’ll have the plot nailed down in about 2 minutes).

I really wanted to love it. The graphics were enchanting and the costumes really enlivened the setting, but as the movie got further along, it just got cheesier and cheesier. My 12 year old sister, who loves movies like this, even told me it wasn’t worth watching and that she never even finished it.

So overall, I don’t recommend it as a quality movie to watch and I especially don’t recommend it to fans of the Disney live-action retellings, you’ll be super disappointed, as I was. I’m sure the movie makers had a great idea with The Little Mermaid, and the premise is enticing I will admit, but the final product didn’t even come close to being well done. I give it a final rating of 2 out of 5 stars.

The Little Mermaid is rated PG for some mild action and magic content. There is no language or sexual content.

Have you watched The Little Mermaid? Did you like it? How do you like it in compared to Disney’s cartoon The Little Mermaid? This is the first time I’ve seen a movie with High King Peter in it since the Narnia movies, do you know of any other movies he’s been in recently?
